Good Bye, Lenin! (2003)

Film · 2h 1m · Rated R · In German

Comedy, Drama, Foreign (non-English)

A son stages an elaborate fiction to protect his fragile mother from the fall of East Germany.

Melancholy and satirical, with dry wit. A comfort watch at a measured pace. Emotionally it is heavy.

What is Good Bye, Lenin! about?

Alex Kerner's mother was in a coma while the Berlin wall fell. When she wakes up he must try to keep her from learning what happened (as she was an avid communist supporter) to avoid shocking her which could lead to another heart attack.

Does it have a happy ending? (spoiler-safe)

Bittersweet. It earns its ending, but not everyone gets what they want.
