CouchRot ("we," "us," or "our") operates the CouchRot mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.

By using CouchRot, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address, username, and display name. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your name and email from those providers. We do not store your Apple or Google passwords.

App Usage Data

We collect the movie and TV show ratings you submit, your watchlist entries, your streaming service preferences, and your interaction history with recommendations. This data powers your personalized recommendations and contributes to the CouchRot Score community rating system.

Device Information

We may collect basic device information such as device type and operating system version to ensure the App functions correctly. We do not collect precise location data.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and personalize AI-powered movie and TV show recommendations
  • To maintain your vault, watchlist, and rating history
  • To calculate and display the CouchRot Score (aggregated, anonymous community ratings)
  • To enable social features such as friend connections and taste comparisons
  • To manage your subscription and account
  • To improve the App and fix bugs

3. Third-Party Services

CouchRot uses the following third-party services to operate. Each has its own privacy policy governing data it processes:

  • Supabase — Authentication and database hosting. Stores your account information, ratings, and watchlist securely with row-level security.
  • OpenRouter — AI recommendation engine. We send your movie preferences and rating history (not your email, name, or personal information) to generate recommendations.
  • Streaming Availability API (RapidAPI) — Provides movie catalog data, posters, and streaming availability information. No personal data is sent.
  • RevenueCat — Manages premium subscriptions and purchase validation through the Apple App Store. Processes purchase receipts but does not have access to your payment details.
  • Apple / Google Sign-In — Provides secure authentication. We receive only your name and email; we never see your password.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on Supabase servers with row-level security enabled, meaning each user can only access their own data. We use industry-standard encryption for data in transit (HTTPS/TLS). While we take reasonable measures to protect your data, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. We share data only as described in Section 3 (with our service providers) and when required by law.

Aggregated, anonymized data (such as the CouchRot Score for a particular movie) may be displayed publicly within the App. This data cannot be used to identify individual users.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data — View all your ratings, watchlist items, and profile information within the App.
  • Export your data — Export your vault as a CSV file from the Settings screen.
  • Delete your data — Permanently delete your account and all associated data from the Settings screen. This action is irreversible.

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), California, or another jurisdiction with data protection laws, you may have additional rights. Contact us at support@couchrot.app to exercise these rights.

7. Children's Privacy

CouchRot is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected such data, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@couchrot.app.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
